The first Opera performance was in September 1845.
The construction of the Theatre building started in 1847 and finished in 1851, it was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Scuderi.
A massive chandelier, weighing 1,218 kg, was shipped from Marseille, France. It was one of the most elegant and fascinating buildings.
A catastrophic fire in 1874 completely destroyed the building, costumes, scenery, music library.
The reconstruction was based on the design of the German architect Viktor Schröter and it was finished in 1896.
During the 1990s, the Opera building did not have enough financial resources for maintenance, so the building became of no use for performances.
The last reconstruction started in 2010/2011.
It is close to opening.
